Generic Baler for 851 Tractor

Introduction

I wrote an article for the Brick Issue, the newsletter of the Brickish Association in which I talked about the sets which were important to me when I was growing up. I mentioned the 851 because I always liked the fact that you could build several different implements to connect on the back.

Preparation

I was discussing the whole Britains farm toys thing with Richard Davies one day and he said he still had a baler which he would be happy to lend me. Here it is.

General Views

Building

Parts Used

Nothing special, and all from stock. I was amazed to find that I only own 4 2x2 yellow tiles though, some of the bales have 1x4 tiles on top.

Features

I love the fact that the power take-off is used and looks like it’s operating somethign but it isn’t. All the functions are powered off the wheels of the baler, they are:

Rotating hay picker

Bale advancer

Bale conveyor

Music

I was building this around the time I was moving to Milton Keynes - I didn’t have any music facility in my bedroom so I didn’t get to listen while building. Perhaps this is why it took so long, I could only be bothered to build in short stints.

Improvements

I don’t like that the bale advancer requires the chain drive but there isn’t space to do it any other way - unless anyone can give me an inspired solution.

Its a shade too big for the scale but I can live with that.
