Sea Monkey Physiology 101

The Sea Monkey brain and telepathic ability remains a mystery to those who study it. Even the Sea Monkeys themselves don’t fully understand how it works. Communication is made by directed thought as long as two Sea Monkey’s have an overlapping sphere of communication. This sphere is the ‘bubble’ to which the Sea Monkey’s telepathic ability extends. The average Sea Monkey has a sphere of communication with a radius of one mile. Communication can take place as long as two spheres overlap. Therefore, average Sea Monkeys can communicate over a range of 2 miles. Sea Monkey priests and other notable figures usually have a larger sphere of communication with a radius of two to three miles. Communication over long distances is made by Telepathic Enhancers. Small devices can be worn which extend the sphere’s radius up to 5 miles while larger facilities have been created to make a network for planetwide communication.

Energy production and metabolism for the Sea Monkeys is a process dependant on the tail. EM radiation, ocean current, and basic filtration allow the Sea Monkeys to acquire necassary metabolites and gives them the energy for metabolism. A correlation exists between tail size and sphere of communication radius, likely due to an enhanced metabolism. When outside sea water (freshwater or air), environmental suits enclosing the tail can be worn for several hours that provide necessary physiological requirements.

Sea Monkeys are an asexual species with a biphasic life cycle. When a Sea Monkey reaches enlightenment they undergo what humans would call death. What this enlightenment is and how it is obtained are still misunderstood as Sea Monkeys find the process hard to translate. In what human xenobiologists originally passed off as a burial ritual, the body of the enlightened Sea Monkey is taken to a hatchery filled with crystals and buried within. This appears to initiate a second stage of developement in which the remains of the buried transform into a crystal. Only the priest of the hatchery has the ability to communicate with what they refer to as The Wise. A mature crystal (refered to by Sea Monkeys as The Venerated Wise) will bud a a very small ball of cells that will eventually grow into a mature Sea Monkey. The balls of cells are harvested by The Caretakers who’s caste lives for the sole purpose of raising and protecting the young.

The Sea Monkey immune system has two primary components. The first is created by the sphere of communication (see neurology) which creates a hostile environment for microbes. Viruses and microorganisms cannot properly function within the sphere of communication, and usually expire if exposed too long. This same phenomenon seems to have no effect on larger organisms, though the Sea Monkeys do not know why. The second system is created by a scaly exoskeleton that protects the whole body. The most vulnerable area appears to be the pores of the tail, through which the process of energy production takes place. As humans colonized Oceanica, their pollutants infiltrated pores of the Sea Monkey tail and created many new diseases. This has become one of the main reasons for hostility between the two races.
