U. If You Want To Build Something:

“I want to build one of these transmissions, which one should I choose?” Well, I have used 14-speed, 13-speed and 5x4 twin stick transmissions in my Lego 4WD vehicle and 16-speed transmission in Lego 4x2 truck 16-speed (check page Vehicles) plus two 12-speed sliding axle transmissions with splitter and range-change unit in Project 5590 I & II, they all have worked well. I have also built some of the personal car transmissions but haven’t tested them in motorized vehicle. But Lego 4WD vehicle is rear engine version and Project 5590 I & II need modified lego gear so it’s not a good idea to build their original transmissions. But there are alternative setups for Project 5590 I & II’s sequential transmissions with standard lego parts so it’s worth to check them, and also that Lego 4x2 truck. And here are my other recommendations. Building instructions can be found on YouTube links called Building example. In tutorial gearboxes there are not only building instructions but also power flow and ratio calculations for each gear.

HEAVY AND SEVERE DUTY TRUCKS (overall gear ratio 15 or more):
A.4. 14-speed transmission version IV
inspired by Volvo I-Shift with crawler gears, copies Volvo’s method for crawler gears, more compact remake, very realistic ratio set, also 13- and 12-speed conversions plus sequential sister transmission if you don’t have transmission driving rings
B.1. 12-speed transmission version I alternative setup
inspired by Volvo and Scania, simple and compact design using main gearbox, splitter and range-change unit, some progression in gear steps giving larger overall gear ratio
C.3. 13-speed transmission version III
inspired by Eaton Fuller transmissions, contains only two gearboxes so good efficiency, progressive-like gear steps (halved gear steps in high range), without splitter possible to get simple 9-speed transmission
D.3. 9-speed transmission version III
inspired by Volvo VT2009B, quite simple overdrive transmission with very realistic ratios including smaller step 7-8 (and 3-4), for heavy duty trucks without trailer
E. 18-speed Transmission version II
inspired by Eaton Fuller transmissions, large overall gear ratio and small gear steps to maximize performance, pro heavy duty trucker’s choice
I.5. 10-speed transmission version V
inspired by Eaton Fuller transmissions, realistic design and ratio set for those who prefer simple operating, for linehaul semi trailer trucks or heavy duty trucks without trailer, two setups
K.3. 16-speed transmission version III
inspired by ZF Ecosplit, now upgraded version with more realistic ratio set and better usability, also sequential sister transmission if you don’t have transmission driving rings
N.4. Twin stick 5x4 version II
good old-fashioned twin stick transmission, now upgraded version with more realistic shift pattern and ratios in auxiliary

LIGHT, MID RANGE AND LINEHAUL TRUCKS (overall gear ratio less than 15):
I.4. 10-speed transmission version IV
inspired by Scania GR871, simple design with 5 main gears and range-change unit, good geometrical gear steps
K.2. 16-speed transmission version II
inspired by Volvo SR62, another 16-speeder with good geometrical gear steps
L.1. Basic 10-speed with splitter
5-speed main gearbox with reverse gear plus splitter, very basic and compact design for lego builders without direct inspirer from real transmissions
O.5. 6-speed light truck transmission
inspired by ZF Ecolite, my simplest 6-speed transmission with good progressive gear steps, two brick frame setups plus studless version, can be also used as wide ratio personal car transmission
O.10. 8-speed medium truck transmission version II
inspired by Volvo R62, compact overdrive transmission for low speed motor with very realistic ratios including smaller step 7-8 (and 3-4), two alternative setups
O.11. 8-speed medium truck transmission version III
inspired by Scania GR875, surprisingly strong progression in gear steps together with range-change unit, three different setups
R.15. 12-speed sequential truck transmission
compact sequential 3-stage transmission if you don’t have transmission driving rings, double bevel type gear or crown gear in every gear pair for easier shifts, possible to add crawler gear to get 14-speed version

PERSONAL CARS & SPORT CARS (progressive gear steps):
P.3. 5-speed version III tutorial setup
simple construction and good progressive gear steps in same gearbox, tutorial gearbox
P.7. 4-speed version II
small and simple design and still progressive gear steps, two brick frame setups and studless version
P.8. 4-speed version III
another small and simple design with progressive gear steps, wide ratio version, additional transfer case for off-road vehicles
P.9. 4-speed version IV & P.10. 4-speed version V
inspired by Borg Warner Super T-10, astonishing six realistic ratio sets for old American muscle cars
P.13. 6-speed version III & P.14. 7-speed version II
inspired by Aston Martin V12 Vantage, close ratio designs for sport cars with progressive gear steps, direct drive and double overdrive setups
R.6. 3-speed sequential transmission
simple sequential transmission if you don’t have transmission driving rings, double bevel type gear or crown gear in every gear pair for easier shifts

TRACTORS:
S.1. 8+4R-speed tractor transmission
basic tractor transmission inspired by Ford 6610 Dual-range, now with more realistic ratios, possible to add powershift (16+8R-speed version), splitter (16+8R-speed) or creeper unit (12+8R-speed) from my other designs
S.5. 6+2R-speed tractor transmission
inspired by old Massey Ferguson 150, very compact tractor transmission if you have lack of space, optional 12+4R-speed version with Hi-Lo powershift
S.6. 12+12R-speed tractor transmission
inspired by Massey Ferguson 4608, quite simple and compact remake, 6 main gears in 2 ranges in both directions, suits also to Valtra A series
S.10. 12+4R-speed tractor transmission
quite basic transmission inspired by John Deere 6420 SyncroPlus, two setups, optional 21+7R-speed version with creeper unit, also sequential sister transmission with brick frame and studless frame if don’t have transmission driving rings
T.3. 12+4R-speed tractor transmission version III
compact and narrow inline design inspired by Ford 4430, 4 main gears with ranges high, medium, low and reverse, note: check efficiency in every gear before final use
T.4. 6+2R-speed tractor transmission version III
inspired by old Valmet 602, simple and compact lego design but very realistic design and ratio set, can be also used as universal transmission for old farm tractors
T.5. 18+6R-speed & 24+6R-speed tractor transmissions
inspired by old Deutz-Fahr DX 86, lots of gears but only two gearboxes, 18+6R-speed basic lego design with real shift patterns and good ratio set, 24+6R-speed with additional creeper range
T.9. 36+36R-speed tractor transmission
inspired by Valtra T121 Classic, lots of gears in quite compact size, 3-speed powershift, 4-speed main gearbox and 3-speed range unit, two setups
