Gus Altobello, Jr ("Gus", "galtobello", "alto", "CosmicFurFace", "(to my kids: Dad", "Baldy", "Gramps", "SmellyFace)")
Favorite LEGO toys/themes: Technic, Mindstorms, Space (for Mindstorms adornment)
My fascination with LEGO began... started as a kid, handed down my little box of LEGO to my kids, then discovered Technic, Mindstorms, eBay, LUGnet, the meaning of "OCD" and why it's ok...
I once built... nothing to compare with the other folks here!
Someday I will build... the 8480 set calling me from across the room. And I still want to combine LEGO Mindstorms with Rokenbok.
LEGO is great because... in a world of pre-programmed video games and single-function toys, creativity is hard to come by. Technic is fantastic because there are few opportunities for folks today to study and enjoy the art and science involved in mechanical devices. Mindstorms is stupendous because there are so very few opportunities for folks to learn, and learn from, computer programming, especially real-time event-driven code. Mindstorms *and* Technics? Mind-altering substance!
LEGO fans are great because... overall as a group they're as dedicated and driven a bunch as any, but somehow seem to lack the religious fervor driving the current tendencies towards slavish dedication to one's icon and unrelenting scorn and derision of others' icons. LEGO fans may dislike non-LEGO block systems, but they tend not to attack those [poor, misguided souls] who use them.
My favorite Non-LEGO Toys: Sims 2, SimCity 4 on PC, Mercenaries on XBox.
My favorite Hobbies & Interests: Computers in general; lately, PVRs and especially networked PCs with PVRs.
My favorite Foods: Supreme pizza, my sisters Black Forest cakes, jambalaya, anything made over a campfire.
My favorite Movies & TV: House; World's Wildest Police Accidents; Trek (non-Voyager); Stooges; Twilight Zone
My favorite Artists: Mondrian, van Gogh, Santana, van der Rohe, my daughter Katie
My favorite Music: Rock, Soul, Funk, R&B, Zydeco, good Country, self-deprecating Punk
My favorite Pets & Animals: Wish I had a cat... *and* an effective non-drowsy antihistamine!
Words which best describe me: Out-of-the-Box (some say "off the wall") in many ways, boringly safe in others.
I love it when... my teenage kids appreciate me (at least once a day, that I see, woohoo!). Also when I can let my wife know I appreciate her (not as often, I fear).
I hate it when... I'm wrong and can't admit it. The kids know, though... :-)
I can't seem to get enough... You got that right!
I always seem to have enough... Not in THIS lifetime. Time, money, patience, clarity, understanding... none of it would kill me if doubled.
I hope I always... can stop to play.
I wish I could... stop to play more often. And somehow keep my kids just young enough to stick around, without abrogating my parental responsibility to send them off.
I could never... REALLY send them off... <sigh> Don't tell them that, though.
I hope I never... forget. All of it.
I wish I hadn't... let my 10yo daughter be forced to eat my portion of peas that fateful day, because my now-16yo daughter is committed to feeding me canned peas in quantity in my old age. "Be nice to your kids, they pick your nursing home."
In my craziest moments... I think I really have a grip.
Believe it or not... sometimes I do. But again, don't tell the kids; it might raise unfulfillable expectations.
If I were super-human... you'd all be cowering in fear. Bright people are capable of some mighty stupid behavior.
More & Less: - more Deity-loving behavior., less "Deity-Lovers" mandating others' behavior.
- more Consideration, less Obfuscation
- more Play, less Avoidance
Rules I try to live by: - Do no harm.
- Leave No Trace.
- Have some fun.
Additional comments:
I'm stunned to find I'd not registered with LUGnet during my 1998-2000 LEGO obsessive streak. It sure feels "old" to have a 7-year-old eBay account!
What a great resource LUGnet is! This is what the Internet aspires to!
