2SR-X Artemis Experimental Transport
Thanks to Mike Yamiolkoski for submitting these pictures of his great space transport
Mike writes...
"This two-stage rocket was designed to lift a human crew and minimal cargo into a high Earth orbit and rendezvous with a space station or other large orbiting facility.
The first stage lifts the craft into a lower orbit, where it is jettisoned and re-fueled to prepare for return to Earth. The upper stage then moves into a higher orbit, but is incapable of leaving the Earth-moon system. To return to Earth, the upper stage re-unites with the lower stage and makes a powered descent to a vertical landing.
My intentions in creating the rocket were (1) to create a vertical take-off rocket, something I hadn't done before, and (2) to design something that looked like it might be built by NASA rather than Starfleet. I wanted a realistic-looking ship, one that might conceivably be built in our lifetime.
The most difficult part of the process was easily the upper stage, where I needed to first build the rocket base, then turn ninty degrees to build the cargo bay (notice that all four sides are facing in opposing directions - that was a real headache) then attaching a conventional front section to the assembly. The cargo bay does open, but there's very limited space inside.
I'd welcome comments on the model!"
