The Blank Shields - Mercenary HeadQuarters

On our way back to the courtyard, I’ll just take a quick opportunity to point out another element of how Dhugal designed for layers of defense. The more military-minded among you have probably already noted that the front wall isn’t very high. That was a deliberate choice, for primarily a couple of reasons. The first, of course, being limited resources, and the second relates to how useful the wall is *meant* to be.

Notice in this view how the walkways are open backed, providing no cover from the courtyard, tower, or keep. Dhugal knew that the outer wall wouldn’t hold off a determined enemy, so he made it high enough to hold off raiders and bandits, but also kept it as useless as possible to anyone who captured it.

Let’s continue on to the courtyard.
