http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptscan.cgi?q=73590 - OK so why wouldn't it
show
up in the PT?  I'm missing something here, and I'm pretty sure it's not
related to my mind.

Only unofficial parts show up in the parts tracker - once they become
official
they are moved to the official library, and you can find them here:
http://www.ldraw.org/Article13.html

The part you're interested, for example, can be downloaded using this
link:
http://www.ldraw.org/library/official/parts/73590b.dat

Thanks, Ross.  That probably means there's a need for an xref function in
the PT, if some part already exists as an official part, it would be better
than saying it couldn't be found.  The fact that it couldn't be found
suggests to novice users that it doesn't exist, which is not the case here.
It'd also be handy for cross-reference purposes.

Or in plain english, regardless of whether it's being re-authored, modified,
etc, the PT should be able to tell people if a part already exists.  I
haven't seen a simple and easy way of browsing existing official parts on
LDRAW.  LDRAW relies on the file name, and not a graphic image of the part.

A couple of things about this...

I agree it'd be pretty cool for ldraw.org to have a visual catalog of official
parts.

But, if you use peeron.com to search for parts, it's pretty easy to tell if a
part has an official LDraw file or not -- if LDraw includes the part, peeron's
image will be a rendering.  Otherwise, the part image will be a photo.

Finally, the "Lookup" box on the PT is more powerful than it seems.  It will
search on file numbers, part titles, and (if no unofficial match is found), it
will attempt to cross-reference the search term with official parts.

(...) It doesn't do that when I type stuff into the Lookup box on the PT. A search for whip only returns one match, when the official library has 4 files with whip in the title or keywords. The match that is found has whip in the keywords. --Travis (17 years ago, 29-Jan-08, to lugnet.cad.ldd)
