PART I

Chapter #1: What happened at the Inn

Benny Brave had just graduated from Wembly Educational Institute with a General Educational Diploma. Learning came difficult to him. He wanted to be a politician, but with a GED this would be impossible to him.

He then contemplated becoming a theif but the prospect of hard jail time scared him, so he decided against that course of work. He decided that he needed to come up with something fast if he want to eat, and eventually prosper.

He heard the noise of the crowd. It was at the stadium. It was either a joisting match between a bunch of rival knights or a friendly game of full contact soccer. What a blood-thirsty audience, very similar to the Romans.

He didn’t have enough money to buy both his last meal and to witness what sounded like an exciting match. He decided a bit of bread and meat, washed down with a bit of ale would hit the spot.

So Benny decided to enter the Inn, and see what the daily special was. After the barwench seated him at a empty table, the door opened and in came John Matthews who was in charge of operations at the village Reeve, “King” Leon.

John grunted, “I haven’t seen you around here boy!!”

Benny replied, “I was staying at the school...I just graduated today”

John answered, “Imagine that...what can you do???”

Benny thought for a moment, and then said “Well I got a General Education Diploma, I don’t have a “specialty” that I can do.”

John chuckled, “a basic good for nothing, if I had a position of a stable-boy, you might be perfect, but I already have one of those... but I need an assistant to run the castle. How are you with math?”

Benny replied, “not bad. I got decent grades in that”

John exclaimed, “then we’ll have to try you out. I hope for your sake it works out...there isn’t too much else for you to do with the GED, except sling manure in the stable.”

After Benny ordered, and finished his bread and meat platter and had sipped his ale, he followed the broad gentleman out of the inn (after paying the barwench for the appetizing dinner).

John looked more like a hardened soldier than the full-time administrator/chamberlain of the regal reeve. They went to the castle, and John brought Benny to the “King”.

Leon was very intrigued that John would bring a boy so young and inexperienced to help him run the operations of the castle. Leon excused them both, and his parting words to the ambitious assistant administrator was to not be too “distracted” as he learned to help run the castle.

Benny was clearly too old to start training to become a knight or even a competant soldier, those required much training. John permitted Benny to visit the barracks in his off time to learn some hand-to-hand combat at the hands of the sergeant-at-arms.

He was given a very nice red cloak with the symbol of the “LION” on it to symbolize his allegience to “King” Leon. At first, Benny had to stay in the barracks on a pile of hay like the other soldiers. As Benny learned the operations of the castle, he was soon given knight status, as the king granted the wearing of epaulettes to his uniform. He was also granted a “body-guard” since he hadn’t been schooled in the fine art of soldiering. By this time, he had enough money to buy a modest house or cottage.

He went to the barracks, and Cletus, one of “king’s” soldiers was assigned to him. It was Benny’s responsibity to ensure the physical and financial well-being to Cletus, and it was Cletus’ responsibility that Benny would stay alive, and not physically harmed.

Cletus moved his earthly possessions into the modest cabin that Benny lived in. They went to the tailor, and Benny had the tailor make an identical red cloak to his for Cletus, with the “LION” on it.

Then they went to the blacksmith shop, and Benny purchased a long spear, a long shield, and a nice helmet with a red plume. He had the blacksmith’s wife paint a matching “LION” design on the long shield. These he gave to Cletus as his welcome gifts. Cletus returned his sword and shield he was issued, and showed the Sergeant-at-arms the instruments of his new office.

Of course, Cletus was an adept soldier who was very proficient with the spear. He was also a very good friend to Benny. Even though he wasn’t that adept at the overall concepts of keeping the castle, Cletus helped Benny as much as he could.

Especially when the Emperor ...err... the Mayor has Benny go on an important mission for the Imperial city, but that is in the next chapter.
