RTL Toronto ROAD SHOW 1 Put on by LEGO to present their new designer sets to the public. July 5,6th at Toronto Zoo. Besides, the LEGO Road Crew and Special Guest, Master Builder Kurt, RTL Toronto Members, Calum, Chris, both Jeffs, Susan, Derek, John, and Wayne all helped out and and wore really cool LEGO Roadshow T-shirts. There were 5 stations plus a Duplo Play Area. Station 1, Construction Zone Consisted of a very nicely constructed city scape with several buildings (well the backdrop of the buildings) The key here was using the tubs of LEGO (with pieces available from the new Designer line) to make a creation that will go somewhere in the city. The small white building (in the center of the photo below) took me about 20 minutes to build. It isnt much but there wasnt a great amount of piece selection. I didnt want to be percieved as hogging the pieces. I could have been done a minute or two sooner, but Chris Magno came by and snatched it away for a few moments, and was disappointed it wasnt a bot. This station yielded participants a BLUE Sticker on their LEGO Roadshow Pass. Station 2, Family Challenge I didnt take a picture of this, but there were about 12 or 13 tables with a large bucket of bricks and other assorted lego elements (again pieces in a typical designer set). The key at this station was to have the family build one or more small creations in a very fast amount of time. There were different games One was for the family or those at the table to build a famous local landmark (of which most built the CN Tower). Another game was picture is worth a 1000 words, one person per table would tell a story based on the models on the table. Really quite cute overall. This station yielded participants a YELLOW sticker on their LEGO Roadshow Pass. Station 3, Model Showcase This was the best station, because this is where reduced Altenburg, or RTL Toronto Train 4++ was situated. The key here besides drooling over the ever improving layout, was to find the 9 monkeys in the layout. Chris and Calum were especially mean, and made the adults find all 9. I was smart and went to Susan, Jeff Elliotts wife, and she let me off with finding only 3. This station yielded participants with a LIME GREEN sticker on their LEGO Roadshow Pass. Station 4, Community Area This is where there was the dreaded Clickits (where you had to build a neckless out of the Clickits Elements or play a game on with one of the LEGO Sports displays (There was a Hockey Arena and a NBA Shooting game). This station yielded participants a RED sticker on their LEGO Roadshow Pass. Station 5, Main Building Tent There were more tubs of LEGO bricks and more Designer type elements. The key to this station was to build a model using the elements and then bring it to the LEGO Master Builder, Kurt to be critiqued. He would then give you a tips/tricks card. Jeff VW filled in for Kurt on Sunday afternoon. If you had completed all 5 stations (meaning you got 4 stickers and the tips card), then Kurt/Jeff VW would also give you a Lego Builder License. This was built by Haley??? age 6. (It is a UFO on a building) This is my helicopter I built in about 12 minutes Besides the passes, they were also giving out Yellow Plastic Construction hats. They were for free, and Jeff Elliott was trying to make me pay for mine. I had a fun time, despite only spending a couple hours there (I had to rush back home to go to work). The only negative thing I had to say was the cost of admission in the Zoo was a bit too high for my liking, and also the cost of parking. I spent $26 CDN to spend about 2 hours at the LEGO show. Maybe next time LEGO will pick a more reasonable place to have a cool event. |
