Exiled Bricktanesians - Isle of Mist

(Gavin’s Log -- Nov 1-4)

Friday, November 2 brought us to the Isle of Mist. We had seen the mist the day before and decided to head for the only patch of land that wasn’t covered in a cloak of cloudiness. We landed on the northernmost point of the exposed land and set up camp. We found the Isle to be similar to the land we left, though it was slightly more dry and hot. Our farmer thought that most of the seeds he brought would germinate, though with varying degrees of success. I told him not to make any judgments yet; this wasn’t where we were staying.

The next morning we got aboard the airship once again and we searched for an ideal site for our civilization. We needed a good harbor, many available resources, and an easily defendable outpost. Saturday saw no such site. It seemed that the soil didn’t have enough clay to make brick making possible. Most of our craftsmen are master bricklayers and construction workers. We plan on building buildings out of stone and bricks, instead of timber. It will take more time, but it will last longer. We are here for the long haul.

Sunday was our lucky day. We sailed into a magnificent bay. The views were spectacular. Virgin timber and limestone cliffs surrounded us. Above we saw birds that mimicked the behavior of sea gulls, but were much smaller and green in color. After a few hours of scouring, we discovered our new home. The site is in the northeast corner of the bay. It is a low plain with limestone cliffs to the west and a forest to the east. The soil near the cliff is clay, excellent for brick making. The water is clean, and teeming with odd-looking fish. We can only hope they are edible. Perseus landed the airship, and we dismounted. Everyone was grinning from ear to ear. It already felt like home. I was as happy as the others, but reminded them that tough days lie ahead. We still have to erect tents and make a camp. After that comes the task of making brick, stone, and wood structures. There is also the task of hunting and gathering. Indeed, a long road stretches in front of us. During the unpacking of the airship, we dubbed the site Kallistas, after our god of wisdom and justice. All hail Kallistas!

Background

In the great land of Bricktannia, kings have ruled for centuries. This reign of kings began with King Dave I, and has now lasted up to King Dave XII, completely uninterrupted. Under the rule of the great kings, Bricktannia has prospered as a city. In the reign of King Dave V, Bricktanesian armies conquered many other cities, forming a vast kingdom. The Kingdom of Bricktannia, as it is now known, is larger than a Bricktanesian can walk in anyone direction for ten days. All was well, as the first ten King Daves were noble, thoughful men. But when a civil war broke out after the inept King Dave XI killed civilians to show his authority, the country began to crumble. The next king, King Dave XII, brutally crushed all opponents, thereby ending the long war. The remaining few underground resistors decided that it would be best to leave. So they gathered up their things, found an airship, and headed off to the fabled Isle of Mist.

Gavin of Gailea

Gavin of Gailea was born at the end of the reign of King Dave XI. He saw his father and siblings die to the henchmen of King Dave XII. His mother died giving birth to him. He was the leader of the underground resistance for two years, plotting its excape. He heard rumors of the Isle of Mist in taverns and through underground sources.

Perseus of Thisspias

Perseus of Thisspias actively fought on behalf of the anti-Dave resistance for many years. He is a skilled swordsman and excellent teacher of military arts. He has seen many fall to the hands of the King’s men, and now wants no more.

Goals

The exiles hope to establish a community where they are free. Free to have a market economy, free to have a religion if they choose (King Dave III banned religion), free to choose a leader. They hope that they will be able to accomplish this on the Isle of Mist. They know the Isle will be dangerous, and the people hostile, but it is their only hope. Anything is better than being ruled by an oppressive monarch.
