Suburban Station

Having bought 8 6478s, I had to think of something to build with them. With all those windows, it had to be some kind of building, so after looking at my lonesome trains, I decided to make a station for them.

Here’s the results:

Update 9 Jan 2002

The council approved plans to add a plant room, to house a pnuematic control for the main doors. Construction was successfully completed today.

The main problems were:
  1. Converting the approx. 3 stud travel of the pnuematic cylinder to 5 stud door movement.
  2. Opening both doors (opposing) with 1 cylinder.
These problems together required a fairly high pressure plant, to overcome the resistance of the doors themselves on the ground. You can sort of see the opening mechanism in picture 3, but 2 8-tooth gears are hidden.

It has two platforms, connected by an overhead walkway. There’s 24 studs between them, allowing clearance for two tracks separated by 8 studs. This is enogh for 6-wide trains, but if you want to run 8-wide, you can either reduce the space between tracks, or reduce the width of either (or both) platforms by two studs. The clearance under the walkway is 13.1 bricks.

The main building has two floors.

The bottom floor has an entrance with sliding doors, and gates out to the main platform. It also has a ticket window, and a station master’s office. It also has a ramp up to the second floor. Note that access ramps have been provided throughout for disabled people. There’s also a clock (not shown).

The top floor has some tables & chairs for passengers waiting for their trains, an automatic ticket machine which always works (this is Legoland, remember?), and gates at the entrance to the walkway for those taking trains from the second platform.

The long platforms on either side have cover for the comfort of passengers, and there’s some more seats on the main platform.
