 David V. Winkler / sculpture / support

I decided to do something big for BrickFest2007.

I ended up with two men, both dressed in tank tops and pants. One is kneeling holding the other person who is reaching skyward.

I wanted to build a sculpture of a man standing. But it is difficult to support a lego sculpture that tall without support. I don’t have the experience with metal to do the internal frame that is standard for this sort of sculpture. So I needed something to hold him up. Traditional sculptures will use props to add support, normally a chair, a robe, or a stump. So I decided to use another person to hold him up.

I made rough plans and bought the yellow and blue pieces.

I did a scale model. People found it confusing. So I added clothing.

It took about a week to re-tailor the digital clothing to the model and simulate the movement of the two men.

But cloth only really looks good made of white legos. This project would take more legos than I had. I started building while I waited for the white pieces to arrive from BrickLink. The white is mostly a veneer over structural legos.

This was the first time that I’ve needed to build in a seam for shipment. The seam needed to be where the cross section was simply connected. This meant that it needed to be above the blue man’s left armpit, slightly more than halfway up the sculpture. The seam mostly works, but is still slightly noticable since stacks of legos will bow slightly upwards.

It packed up into a single crate to my suprise. It’s heavy. I hadn’t planned on it being twice as heavy as my last sculptures. I added handles to the sides of the crate. It survived and was displayed at BrickFest2007. It was displayed at NWBrickCon2007 and won the award for “Super-Heavyweight Art”.

The sculpture contains about 30000 pieces. It is approximately 6’11” tall.

I named the sculpture “Support.”
