LAURA PLAYS WITH BRICKS Welcome to my LUGNET page! The Keep The best castle keeps are located on the tops of hills, but its hard to create 3D scenery without lots and lots of bricks. I cheated a bit here, but so far, its working out pretty well... Ill put some pics up of the supports as soon as I take them. A Working Mill Right now I am in the research phase of this project - collecting pics of real-life mills. The biggest problem is finding detailed enough descriptions of how mills worked in the middle ages! The Cathedral Only two years out of my dark ages, I am still learning about the design and build process of large-scale original MOCs. My first real project is a Norman-Era (1066-1218ish) English cathedral. Why a cathedral, you ask? Well, the major elements of the architectural style of England in the early Norman Period were large proportions, round arches, simple carvings on column headers and footers, square towers above the crossing in churches, and thick walls with small windows. Roofs were still predominantly made of wood, since the flying buttresses and intricate ribbing needed to support stone vaults had not yet been discovered. All of this combine to make this an ideal style for LEGO building! The only problem is getting enough arches. After researching the common design elements of the time period, I started creating my cathedral in MLCAD. The process really helped me to appreciate the beauty in symmetry! Here are some ray-traced pictures of the design in MLCAD: http://www.lugnet.com/~1310/designs Once the design was finished, and I had collected enough parts to get started, I cleared the space on my LEGO table and got to work. More pictures of the building process are here: http://www.lugnet.com/~1310/building Its done! I finished it at the TEXLUG meeting on March 9, 2002 (thanks to Tom). Im still working on the village/abbey/whatever that will go around it, though, so check back soon for more pictures. I also have some other MOCs, which are not quite so involved. http://www.lugnet.com/~1310/village Those pictures are forthcoming. |
