Reprendre

“…a big ship rigged privateer, ten guns a side, flush decked… What the Frogs call a corvette…. A twenty gun corvette under a good French captain was a serious menace…”
- CS Forester “The Commodore”

On a glassy sea…

Off the starboard bow.

Capitaine Legeaux
on the quarterdeck

Gun ports hiding
the ten gun broadside

From the masthead of
a neighbouring frigate,
no doubt…

The stern

The bow, with detailed
yellow bloused figurehead.

The privateer Reprendre is the latest from Port Brique yards.

Inspired by some the recent work displayed on .pirates, the Reprendre represents a return to shipbuilding for me, and incorporates several improvements over my earlier large (4 centre section+) vessels: the Eponine II, the Misérable and the HMLS Intractible. The hull curve is more graceful (ala Stephen Rowe’s work) and the tops more substantial (Kurt Baty’s work). And the colour scheme is very traditional (I have yet to apply the Baty-esque electrical tape though).

Following Kurt Baty’s comments on Reprendre, the Reprendre returned to Port Brique’s shipyards for a partial rebuild.

The topsides were cut back to the top of the hull section and the forechains (the shipbuilders resisted the urge to step the formast further for’ard), and experimented with different ideas to properly capture the curve.

The end solution was to use SNOT for the hull, and return to studs-up for the deck. The curve is achieved using low slopes (3x3x1), standard slopes (3x2x1) and steep slopes (3x2x3). This can be seen here:

The rail will probably be rebuilt to better show off the SNOT curve of the hull, but it does the job in the meantime.

This rebuild has gave Reprendre significantly more room for’ard of the foremast... space for a couple of chasers. ;-)

Here’s some more pics following the rebuild.

The Reprendre is now docked beside the Misérable ... the old Mis is looking old indeed.

I’m happy with the outcome, and although Reprendre has used up a goodly portion of my shipbuilding supplies, there’s more being planned...
