Well, lets start with the white and red knight helmets. Way back in the late
70's, early 80's, Lego came out with their first castle series. Actually it
was only three sets (#375 or 6075, #383 or 6077, #677 or 6083), but they were
none the less nifty. Two of these three sets came with knights, armored in
this style of helmet. There were four colors, white, grey, black and red. I
only have the two, and I'm always looking for more knights from this style (as
well as from the crusaders). Unfortunately, finding reasonably priced old
style knights is a great task. I suspect that Lego changed from this style to
what I call the 'pawn' style helmet (pawn like on a chess board, as seen in the
Black Monarch's Castle #6085) because the old style helmets did not stay
together very easily, and were made from thinner plastic. I suspect they were
also a choking hazard as well.
Trouble, on the other hand, wears merely a painted crusader style helmet, with
two small white feathers stuck in on either side to resemble horns. Long story
behind that one. Back in my youth, when I did not respect my lego men, I
painted them with enamel paint. I didn't do all that much, but I did succeed
in permently ruining two sets of crusader armor. One helm I was able to
salvage, which can be still found on Haleron. However the armor is made from a
different plastic than the helms. The paint thinner has no effect on helms,
but on the armor, it will destroy it. Troubles breast plate is repainted gold
because, though still wearable, it no longer looked like anything. However,
once repainted, it resembles a very beaten and old suit of armor. Though the
picture doesn't show it, it's actually a really neat effect.
